Position: Southeast Asian History, Univ. of Connecticut

The History Department and Asian/Asian American Studies Institute, in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut, are seeking a tenure-track assistant professor in Southeast Asian history (including the Philippines). The position will be a joint appointment between the Asian/Asian American Studies Institute and the History Department, the tenure home of the appointment.

Developing a strong presence in Asian Studies is a significant component of the university’s larger faculty expansion. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing a coherent Asian History program within the History Department in conjunction with the Asian/Asian American Studies Institute. In addition to research, this individual will be expected to teach appropriate courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, engage in scholarly activities, and participate in outreach and service activities. The teaching load will be equally split between the Institute and History.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Asian history (or foreign equivalent) by start date; research specialization in southeast Asia (including the Philippines); demonstrated excellence in research and teaching; strong interest in graduate teaching and mentoring; excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Research interests in colonialism/neocolonialism/Postcolonialism, empire, diaspora, migration, and/or revolutionary and social movements; ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

Appointment Terms
This is a tenure-track, full time, 9-month appointment with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2013. This position is at the Storrs campus. Opportunity may arise to teach courses at other regional campuses. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Position: Ethnic Studies, U.C. Berkeley

The Comparative Ethnic Studies Program in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for an Assistant Professor with a social science background (#1752). We define Comparative Ethnic Studies broadly as work that theorizes race both particularly and generally; work on more than one distinct racialized group; or work on the intersection and/or co-constitution of race and other systems of difference.

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring innovative Social Science theory and methods to bear on the study of race, and who use the study of race to contribute to social theory generally (articulating the difference that race makes in critically understanding history and society). Teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate courses, including a course on social science methods.

The department seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education, and who will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in an appropriate disciplinary or interdisciplinary field by the time of appointment. Position: Contemporary Asian Art, Univ. of Connecticut

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Connecticut seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in Art History with a specialty in contemporary Asian art and the ability to offer courses that connect the arts of Asia to other cultures and to the Asian diasporas. This position is a joint hire with the Asian American Studies Institute, in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Candidates should be able to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate curricula, and will teach introductory, intermediate, and upper-level courses in Asian art and outside of that area of specialization, including topic oriented courses. The capacity to teach a range of courses from contemporary to ancient Asian art, with an emphasis on twentieth and twenty-first century East Asian art, visual culture, and transculturalism is highly desirable.

The Department welcomes candidates with contemporary approaches to the study of art history and visual culture, which may include curatorial practice. The art history program is integrated with a vigorous studio program in a liberal arts university. Cross-listings with Asian and Asian American Studies and other programs in the university are strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will participate in faculty activities and college committee work with both the Department and the Asian American Studies Institute.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Completed PhD, with specialization in Asian Art History; demonstrated excellence in research, including scholarly publications and/or exhibition catalogues; and excellent written and oral communication skills. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications: Research specialization in contemporary Asian art and visual culture studies, with knowledge of East Asian Art and its transnational/diasporic connections; interest in interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies; demonstrated ability to contribute through research, teaching, curating and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience; and two years college teaching experience with strong interest in graduate teaching and mentoring.

This is a 9-month appointment and will begin on August 22, 2013. Position is at the Storrs campus. The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a position as an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in any, or some combination, of the following areas: 1) diversity and identity; 2) diversity, civil society and political action; or 3) legal or philosophical frameworks for diverse democracies. The anticipated starting date is July 1, 2013. The position is part of the interdisciplinary Haas Diversity Research Center (HDRC) and will be conducted under the auspices of its Diversity and Democracy cluster.

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or J.D. degree (beginning assistant professor candidates should have completed their degree by July 1, 2013) in one of the following disciplines: sociology, political science, law, or philosophy; they should have a research and teaching portfolio that examines ways in which our political, social, and legal institutions and practices adapt (or fail to adapt) to an increasingly multi-racial, multi-ethnic population. Special consideration will be given to candidates who work in any of the following areas: 1) the content and contestation of group identities; 2) the civic and political engagement of diverse populations within local, national, and transnational contexts; or 3) the normative or legal implications of racial and ethnic diversity within democratic societies.

This search will be conducted with the participation of the Departments of Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, and the School of Law (including its Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program). The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment in a department to be determined by the candidate’s preferences, disciplinary training, and departmental fit. Position: Research Manager, Immigration, Pew Center on the States

The Pew Charitable Trusts is driven by the power of knowledge to solve today’s most challenging problems. Pew applies a rigorous, analytical approach to improve public policy, inform the public and stimulate civic life. The Pew Center on the States (PCS) is a division of The Pew Charitable Trusts that identifies and advances effective solutions to critical issues facing states.

We take an in-depth, nonpartisan approach to track and report on what happens across the 50 states and the District of Columbia—using evidence to determine which policies work and which do not. When the facts are clear, Pew and our partners advocate for practical reforms, including federal policies that affect states, in areas such as elections, corrections, children’s dental health, voluntary home-based programs for new and expectant families, pensions, economic mobility and health care costs.

The Pew Center on the States will be launching a new research initiative on immigration. The project will likely focus on two areas: the evolving role that states are playing in establishing immigration policy, and the impacts of high skilled immigrants. The Manager, Strategic Initiatives – Immigration will report to the Director of Strategic Initiatives in PCS. This individual will work with the Director and other staff to explore research opportunities and develop a research agenda on these issues and related topics. This position is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office.

The ideal candidate will have substantive work experience in designing and managing public policy-related initiatives and demonstrated ability to effectively research public policy issues and maintain productive relationships across a wide spectrum of organizational staff, external partners and stakeholders. In addition, the ideal candidate will have a background and specialized knowledge on immigration issues, particularly how immigration policies may impact state and national economies.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and manage comparative research and analysis on three main topics: (1) an in-depth analysis of the changing landscape of immigration policy at the state level, (2) the benefits and costs of immigration, especially as they vary across states, and (3) the demand for and value of highly skilled immigrants
  • Engage PCS staff and external partners in generating ideas for research and analysis related to immigration; contribute original ideas and explore and evaluate state and federal policy issues surfaced by others
  • Assist project director with defining project scope and deliverables to develop full-scale project plans for Board approval and estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals
  • Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion. Liaise with project stakeholders on an ongoing basis
  • Pro-actively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans, if necessary
  • Work with incoming project directors and staff to smoothly transition projects for long-term success
  • Work closely with the project director to design and apply research methods used for a variety of research products, including empirical analysis, compilation and analysis of data sets, and literature reviews
  • Develop and manage contracts with wide array of consultants (including high level external researchers on immigration and economic analysis) —ensuring the work is designed to answer relevant policy questions and conducted in a high quality, rigorous and timely manner which contribute to the success of the project
  • Work closely with Communications staff to design and implement effective dissemination techniques, including written products, online communications strategies, and high-level policy research convenings
  • Develop and maintain strong, productive relationships with external partners, including policy researchers and national associations whose members are state policy leaders, to produce original research and analysis and convene lawmakers
  • Present findings internally and externally with policy makers, media, and other stakeholders at workshops, forums, and conferences as appropriate
  • Cultivate and maintain knowledge of public policy discussions and research methodologies and practices. Participate in conferences, seminars, and other professional development activities to keep current in areas of focus
  • Build and maintain a network of local, state, and national research contacts to help inform Pew’s research efforts
  • Work with operations and administrative staff to effectively oversee and manage the project budget

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree in a relevant field strongly preferred
  • Minimum of eight yeas of professional and relevant experience designing and implementing research projects that inform and advance effective public policy
  • Demonstrated expertise in immigration policy at the federal or state level, including knowledge of current trends, principal theories, leading thinkers and major concerns with state and federal immigration policy arenas
  • Experience conducting and managing complex projects aimed at informing and advancing effective public policy
  • Acute political awareness and nonpartisan perspective and approach. Demonstrated ability to build relationships among individuals and organizations with a range of interests and perspectives on immigration issues. Experience cultivating relationships with funding partners a plus
  • Strong analytical skills; asks probing questions, synthesizes material and focuses quickly on the essence of an issue and the means to address it
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with internal staff and external partners to gain support for and commitment to initiatives
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills including presentation and facilitation skills; a clear, effective writing style; and excellent listening skills
  • Effective public speaking ability, with experience as a media spokesperson preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of presenting before key audiences, including state and federal policy makers, business leaders, the donor community and other influential groups. Experience designing and executing convenings to reach these audiences a plus

Position: Research Coordinator, Center for Migration Studies

The Center for Migration Studies is a small, New York-based educational institute devoted to the study of international migration, to the promotion of understanding between immigrants and receiving communities, and to public policies that safeguard the dignity and rights of migrants, refugees and newcomers. CMS was established in 1964 and formally incorporated in 1969 by the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles, Scalabrinians, an order of Catholic priests dedicated to work with migrants. CMS works with scholars and researchers; policy-makers on international, regional, national and local levels; faith-based groups; non-governmental organizations; and community-based organizations. It enjoys consultative status at the United Nations (UN).

CMS seeks a research coordinator to report to its Executive Director (ED). The position will be responsible for assisting the ED in developing, funding, organizing, carrying out, publicizing and reporting on CMS research projects. The position requires at least a master’s degree, preferably a doctorate, in a relevant field; expertise in quantitative data analysis; program evaluation expertise; strong writing skills; a track record of high-quality publications; knowledge of international migration research and public policy issues; and Spanish and English language proficiency. Among other responsibilities, the CMS research coordinator may be asked to:

  • Work with the ED, Editorial Boards for the International Migration Review (IMR) and the Journal on Migration and Human Security (JMHS), and other CMS constituents to identify research issues that the agency – consistent with its mission, vision and resources – might pursue
  • Develop grant narrative, interface with funders, prepare grant and contract proposals, manage grants, and report to funders
  • Play a leading role in research project design, including establishment of advisory group members and development of research methodology
  • Work with the ED and others to carry out CMS research projects, including: liaising with advisory groups; conducting literature reviews; analyzing data sets and programs; performing field work; and co-authoring papers and reports
  • Coordinate and staff CMS’s integration, human trafficking, migration and development, refugee protection, and detention initiatives
  • Assist the ED in initiating, producing and editing the JMHS, including: working with the Editorial Board to identify JMHS article topics and authors; approaching potential authors; publicizing the journal in multiple fora; coordinating the logistics of submission, peer-review, online publication, and production of an annual hard copy volume
  • Identify and cultivate institutional partners for research projects, as well as potential authors for CMS reports, papers, and journals
  • Work with the CMS Communications’ Coordinator to organize events, conferences, seminars, symposia, meetings and dialogues that feature CMS research projects and signature policy issues
  • Participate in conferences and meetings that are germane to research priorities, and that can serve as vehicles to promote CMS’s work and to recruit potential authors, peers reviewers, speakers, and institutional partners
  • Blog for CMS website on research projects, policy issues, publications, reports and events
  • Handle routine administrative responsibilities and respond to requests for support from the ED, board and related agencies

Position: Sociology, Cal State East Bay

The Sociology and Social Services Department at California State University, East Bay consists of 7 tenured and tenure-track faculty and approximately 7 lecturers, and offers a B.A. in sociology. The department also offers a minor in Asian Studies with an emphasis on the Filipino community, immigration and labor.

Duties: The primary responsibility of the Sociology Assistant Professor faculty position in Race and Ethnic Relations is to teach and develop the core diversity curriculum. Teaching courses in a secondary specialization may occur. Also, the development of new courses on topics, such as, Critical Race Theory; Race and Ethnic Identity; Race, Ethnicity, and Family; Race and Sexuality; Race and Culture/Media; and/or Race and Labor Relations would be welcome additions to the current course offerings. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses.

Qualifications: Doctorate degree; however, preference will be given to candidates who have completed the Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field with a specialization in Race and Ethnic Relations. ABD candidates will be given consideration, but the degree must be completed by the date of appointment. The secondary area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to a candidate with a concentration in globalization with an emphasis on teaching courses such as, Immigration, Migration, Refugee Experience, Economic Globalization, Transnational Practices and/or Global Health.

Position: Asian American Studies/Sociology, Stanford Univ.

The Department of Sociology, in collaboration with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) at Stanford University, as part of a university-wide Faculty Development Initiative sponsored by the Provost and the Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, has announced a tenure-line search for a new faculty position in the area of Asian American studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2013. We seek scholars whose work focuses on the experiences of Asian-origin people in the United States.

Ideally this scholar would also have an interest and background in Asian studies and comparative studies in race and ethnicity. Research specializations might include, but are not limited to Asian American identities and racial formations, immigration and immigrant adaptation, and transnational connections among Asian peoples.

Scholarship: Asian American High School Students to Attend Community College

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF), the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to providing college scholarships for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students, is now accepting applications for the APIASF Community College Scholarship Program. The organization’s new scholarship opportunity–ranging from $2,250 to $5,000 each during the 2012-13 academic school year–is available to 155 full-time, degree-seeking AAPI students who are enrolled at either City College of San Francisco, Coastline Community College, De Anza College, or South Seattle Community College.

The APIASF Community College Scholarship Program applicants must be of AAPI ethnicity as defined by the U.S. Department of Census and must be a citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States or a citizen of the U.S. Freely Associated States. Other eligibility requirements include applicants submitting a request for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)–although applicants do not necessarily need to be recipients of federal financial aid to be eligible for the APIASF Community College Scholarship Program. The application deadline is Oct. 12, 2012.

“We’ve known for some time that the largest population of AAPI college enrollment, at 47.3 percent, is in the community college sector; therefore, our goal has always been to work toward creating significant opportunities at those types of institutions for students to access, complete, and succeed in postsecondary education,” said APIASF President & Executive Director Neil Horikoshi. “For those reasons, we created the APIASF Community College Scholarship Program as a natural extension of our efforts to not only increase overall AAPI student success, but to develop scalable models for training future leaders who will excel in their career, serve as role models in their communities, and will ultimately contribute to a vibrant America.”

Additionally, the APIASF Community College Scholarship Program supports the new Partnership for Equity in Education through Research (PEER) project, which APIASF along with the National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education (CARE) launched recently to help realize the full degree-earning potential of the AAPI student population. Considered one of the largest investments to date to increase AAPI student success, the PEER project is a three-year, nearly $2 million effort being supported by The Kresge Foundation, USA Funds, and the Walmart Foundation. The PEER project also works collaboratively with three of the APIASF Community College Scholarship Program institutions: De Anza College, City College of San Francisco, and South Seattle Community College.

The Asian American Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor whose scholarship and teaching focus on Hmong Americans, beginning August 2013. The 2012 North American Chinese Sociologists Association (NACSA) Annual Conference

The 2012 NACSA Annual Conference will be held on August 16th in Denver, Colorado, following the great tradition of our association to hold a one-day mini-conference prior to the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association (August 17-21, 2012). The aim of this year’s conference is broadly defined to be two-fold: to promote scholarly research on Chinese society, culture, economy, and immigrant life in the greater Chinese Diaspora, and to continue building bridges and guanxi among scholars of Chinese heritage and non-Chinese ancestry in North America, Asia, and other parts of the world.

Theme(s)
The themes of this year’s conference are open. We call for submissions of regular papers/panels and will let themes emerge from the submissions. We encourage scholars and graduate students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the greater Chinese Diaspora to submit papers/panels in either English or Chinese.

Sessions
The 2012 mini-conference plans to hold 8 concurrent sessions and a plenary session.

Submission Deadline: Early May, 2012 (email hao@jhu.edu if you need more time). Submit your paper or abstract via email to: Lingxin Hao (hao@jhu.edu).

Individual papers: Complete papers or paper abstracts will be considered. Paper abstracts may be 1-2 pages but must contain sufficient detail and evidence of timely completion for the program committee in its decision making. Papers to be presented at the ASA are eligible for this submission. List the authors’ and coauthors’ names, organizational affiliations, and email addresses.

Panels: Any NACSA member can organize a panel. Each panel should consist of three presenters and a discussant. The panel organizer must submit a proposal specifying the theme of the panel along with the
summaries/abstracts of the papers selected. List all panelists’ names, organizational affiliations, and email addresses.

Submissions may be in English or in Chinese. The program committee assumes that the language used in individual papers/abstracts or panel proposals would be the same as the language used in presentation at the
annual conference. Papers should be formatted in Word or pdf and sent as an attached file.

Acceptance Announcement: Mid May, 2012
Email announcements to all organizers/discussants/authors about the tentative panels to which their presentations are assigned. A formal acceptance letter will be provided to all the authors for their
travel funding application and/or visa application purposes.

Special Topic Call for Papers: “Phantom Asian America”

Since its emergence in the late 1960s, Asian American studies has gained ground in the academy, and yet the term “Asian America”itself remains in doubt. Where is Asian America? Who are Asian Americans? What constitutes Asian American experience and who is qualified to speak for and about Asian Americans? Why does “Asian American” remain an appealing identity category despite its inherent vagueness?

The special topic “Phantom Asian America”invites essays that probe into histories, literatures and other modes of cultural expression to reflect on the making and meaning of Asian America. We invoke the image of the “phantom” to highlight not only the instability and permeability of Asian America but also the haunting power and affecting forces of Asian American experiences.

Issues of concern may include: Is Asian America a “phantom” entity? How has the presence of Asian Americans as “spectral” others infiltrated Asia and America and caused changes in social structures and cultural coalitions? Is “Asian American” (as both an identity category and an instituted discipline/discourse) haunted by its own ghostly others? Who are the “phantom figures” occupying the margins of Asian America and what are their stories? With what strategies could we excavate the “phantom histories”-histories repressed and untold-about Asian America?

“Phantom Asian America”also welcomes articles that meditate on the “phantastic” lure of Asian American identity in transnational contexts. How have Asian American cultures been circulated and received around the globe? How could we re-appraise Asian American histories and cultures in a world of shifting borders and
transnational links? What does it mean to teach and undertake Asian American studies outside the United States, especially in Asia? Is “Asian American” a substantive presence in Asia or a phantom of Asia’s desire for globality? This special topic encourages contributors to move beyond a narrowly defined Asian America to explore its “phantomistic” circumferencesand permutations, with attention to the networks of power and affect between, as well as beyond, Asia and America.

Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies is a peer-reviewed journal published two times per year by the Department of English, National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan. Concentric is devoted to offering innovative perspectives on literary and cultural issues and advancing the transcultural exchange of ideas. While committed to bringing Asian-based scholarship to the world academic community, Concentric welcomes original contributions from diverse national and cultural backgrounds.

We understand the lack of resources available on this campus, but after more than 20 years of fighting to stabilize this intellectual endeavor at Williams only to feel from both administration and faculty that this study is not a priority. We are willing to work with the administration and the CEP to institutionalize AA Studies in the curriculum either by creating a separate program or to combine with an already existing department. We need your support to show the faculty and administration that there is widespread support for AA Studies. If we can prove to them that individuals outside of the Williams community see its significance in the Williams curriculum, they will be more likely to open up to our suggestions as we work together towards our goal.

AA Studies is an ethnic study, not an area studies such as Asian Studies. The understanding of the Asian American experience both in America and across the globe is a legitimate and growing intellectual field since the 60s. Teaching Fellowships in China

OYCF Teaching Fellowships 2012-13

The Overseas Young Chinese Forum (“OYCF”), a non-profit organization based in the United States, is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its Teaching Fellowships, which sponsor short term teaching trips by overseas scholars or professionals (Chinese or non-Chinese) to universities or other comparable advanced educational institutions in China. The subjects of teaching include all fields of humanities and social sciences, such as anthropology, art, communication, economics, education, geography, law, literatures, philosophy, political science, sociology, etc.

OYCF will grant thirteen fellowship awards to support short term teaching trips during the Academic Year of 2012-13, including five OYCF-Ford fellowships in the amount of $2,500 each and nine OYCF-Gregory C. and Paula K. Chow fellowships in the amount of $2,000 each. The application deadline is August 15, 2012. Awards will be announced on September 15, 2012.

If you have a Ph.D., J.D., J.S.D. or a comparable graduate degree from, or is currently an advanced doctoral candidate (having passed the Ph.D. qualification examination and finished at least three years of graduate studies) in a university in North America or other areas outside China, and are interested in teaching a covered subject in a college or graduate school in Mainland China, please find online the Information and Application Procedures for the OYCF Teaching Fellowships at http://www.oycf.org/Teach/application.DOC. Ph.D. students are highly encouraged to apply because an independent teaching experience will add significant weight in the resumes and help build strong connection with China’s academia. As noted therein, preference will be given to teaching proposals that include comparative or interdisciplinary perspectives; are about subjects that China is in relative shortage of teachers; or will be conducted at universities in inland provinces and regions. This year, we dedicate at least 3-4 fellowships as the Central or Western Region Teaching Fellowships to teaching fellows who plan to teach in an inland province or autonomous region. Accordingly, teaching proposals specifically designed for teaching in these regions are especially welcome.

AAPIPRC Organizes National Conference on Applied Research

Stakeholders from the non-profit sector, government, and higher education are coming together in the first national conference to focus on collaborative policy research for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The conference is sponsored by the Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy Research Consortium (AAPIPRC) and will take place on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 from 1-6pm at the National Education Association in Washington, D.C.

“This conference is a first step towards a powerful collaboration that will help ensure that future national policies actually take our communities into consideration in a meaningful way,” says Lisa Hasegawa, Executive Director of the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development.

Public policy impacts our daily lives, from immigration and health coverage, to neighborhood infrastructure and media institutions. Yet, there is currently no think tank focused specifically on how policy impacts AAPI communities. This conference fills that gap by promoting research that complements the existing work of advocacy, service and policy groups, while creating a pipeline for scholars interested in applied research.

“There is great need to elevate the local concerns of our growing and diverse AAPI populations to the national level,” says Tarry Hum, Associate Professor at City University of New York. “This is an opportunity to explore research collaborations that will address national policy issues from the perspectives of AAPI communities.”

There will be a special pre-conference at 10:30am for students and youth. “I’m hoping to connect my past work experience and current schooling to community-based policy and advocacy,” says Ami Patel, an Asian American Studies graduate student at UCLA, who previously organized and advocated for green jobs and tuition relief.

Co-sponsors include the National CAPACD, the White House Initiative on AAPIs, the National Education Association, and the Association for Asian American Studies.

My name is Pauline Chan, a graduate student in the Counseling Psychology doctoral program. I am a second generation Chinese American and am working on my dissertation under the direction of Dr. Belle Liang. The study focuses on the social experiences of Asian American women. The study has been approved by the Boston College Office for Research Protections Institutional Review Board (Protocol #12.172.01A).

Position #2: Communications Intern – Spring and Summer 2012

Position Description
NAKASEC is looking for a Communications Intern for Spring and Summer 2012. He/She will assist the Deputy Director in communications and media activities and will play a critical role in the communications team implementing traditional and social media strategies. This is a full-time position, unpaid based in Washington, DC. College credit can be made available.

Major Responsibilities Include:

  • Monitoring national and regional news on issues that NAKASEC and affiliates work on, compiling daily news clips for internal staff distribution and bookmarking articles online
  • Updating and maintaining a database of mainstream, regional, ethnic and online journalists, producers and bloggers
  • Tracking press work, creating paste-ups of placements and updating monthly media reports
  • Creating and maintaining an editorial calendar for media strategies
  • Assisting with drafting materials such as press releases, media advisories, biographies, pitch letters and or other correspondence
  • Uploading relevant media articles and placements to Facebook, Twitter and website
  • Support Deputy Director and project teams to ensure timely progress of work
  • Providing general office support

Qualifications

  • Commitment to immigrant rights, civil rights, and social justice issues
  • Results-oriented, organized and has strong attention to detail
  • Willingness to learn, ability to follow instructions, take initiative, multi-task, work quickly and be flexible
  • Be a team player
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to speak, write and understand intermediate Korean
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (primarily Word and Excel) and Web 2.0 experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably in communications

Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN)
Scholarship Program 2012

The mission of AAGEN is to promote, expand and support Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) leadership in Government. In accordance with AAGEN’s mission, the scholarship program has been designed for students in their continuing education to better prepare themselves for positions of leadership and trust in the Federal, State and Local governments.

Two (2) scholarships for $1,500.00 and two (2) scholarships for $1,000 will be awarded in 2012. The AAGEN scholarship is a one-time award; former AAGEN scholarship winners are not eligible.

POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND RULES
The Scholarship Program is administered under the general direction of the Board of Directors (BoD), but its day-to-day management is the responsibility of AAGEN’s Chairperson or the latter’s designee.

The applications for the scholarship will be accepted until April 1, 2012. The application form can be found at the AAGEN website www.aagen.org. Notification of the awardees will be made prior to each year’s annual AAGEN Leadership Conference. Announcement and presentation of the awards will be made by the Scholarship Awards Committee at the annual AAGEN Leadership Conference.

Scholarship checks will be made out to the college or university the recipient will be attending. These checks will be directly deposited into the student’s account.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS COMMITTEE
The AAGEN Scholarship Awards Committee has the responsibility for receiving, reviewing and judging the applications. The Committee, comprised of three members, will have a period of four (4) weeks for its deliberations. It shall prepare and submit a written recommendation of its choices for scholarship awards to the Chair of AAGEN by May 1st of each year. It shall be the latter’s responsibility to relay promptly the recommendations to the Board of Directors. The BoD’s concurrence of the Awards Committee’s recommendations shall be binding. If there is a protest from any BoD member on a particular proposed ‘awardee’, the full BoD and the Scholarship Awards Committee must come to a resolution within 2 weeks, or the award will not be made.

ELIGIBILITY FOR AWARDS
All persons submitting applications in the AAGEN Scholarship Program should be aware that the program is governed by the following requirements:

  1. The application, supported by documentation (transcripts from an accredited post-secondary school for current students or from high school for students starting at a college or university), must show a record of academic excellence, service at the local, state and/or federal government, and a seriousness of purpose in pursuing post-secondary education/training goals
  2. The applicant must provide information about courses which will be taken and how they will improve the applicant’s ability to serve at the local, state, and/or federal level
  3. The applicant must support the principles advanced by AAGEN
  4. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal U.S. permanent resident

SCORING CRITERIA
Applications will be evaluated based on five (5) criteria listed below.

  1. Relationship of courses to be taken (or field of study) with service at the local/state and/or federal government levels
  2. Demonstration of academic achievement and excellence with a copy of either standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, GRE) and/or a 3.3 or better grade point average
  3. School, employment or extra-employment activities that demonstrate a seriousness of purpose in serving at leadership positions in the local/state and/or federal government levels
  4. Letters of nomination and recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, public official or an AAGEN member, who knows the applicant well and is qualified to recommend the applicant. The letters should convey information about the applicant and his/her ability to serve in leadership positions at the local, state or federal government. These letters should not be written by a family member of the applicant
  5. Each applicant is required to respond to at least three of five questions listed below. Each essay must be typed or submitted on a disk or a flash drive or by e-mail; double-spaced, and contain no more than 500 words

SEARAC is now accepting applications for our 14th annual Leadership & Advocacy Training. This training is open to any applicants who are Southeast Asian American or who work with Southeast Asian American communities across the country. The training will be held from July 15-17 in Washington, D.C. The application is available online. Apply today!

Who should attend? Southeast Asian Americans who want to learn more about policy and advocacy. The training is open to people of all ages. In the past, we’ve had professionals, young professionals, elders, staff of community-based organizations, and high school, undergraduate, and graduate students attend. The training is tailored to Southeast Asian Americans, but is also open to anyone working with the Southeast Asian American community.

How much advocacy and policy experience should I have? The SEARAC training is geared toward those who are starting out in their knowledge of advocacy and policy. No prior knowledge of advocacy and policy is required. Knowledge of the issue areas we cover (education, health care, immigration, and aging) is helpful but not required.

How much does it cost? SEARAC makes the training as affordable as possible for our participants. Our stipends cover most of the costs of travel, lodging, and food, but participants may need to cover a small portion of their own travel. If you are accepted, we ask for a $75 deposit to hold your place, and it will be refunded once you complete the training.

When is the application due? SEARAC will accept applications until Sunday, April 29 at midnight PDT.

Call for Supporters: Mixed-Race Bone Marrow Documentary

My name is Nelson Medina and I am the Producer of Marketing and Distribution of the documentary Mixed Match, which is being produced by Meditating Bunny Studio Inc., a Vancouver-based independent production company founded by filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns.

Mixed Match is a feature-length documentary that explores the need to find mixed ethnicity bone marrow and cord blood donors to donate to multiethnic patients suffering from life threatening blood diseases such as leukemia. This live action and animated film focuses on the main characters’ struggles to survive against incredible odds.

We are fundraising $25,000 through IngieGoGo, to cover expenses in the production and post-production stages. We would be most appreciative of your support in spreading awareness to this fundraising campaign.

We feel that Mixed Match might capture the interest of the audience of Asian Nation, as the film highlights the stories of many part-asian multiethnic patients. CAPAL Federal Internships (10+ Placements) and Scholarships (3 awards) for Public Service

The Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan educational and professional organization dedicated to building leadership and public policy knowledge within the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. Its mission is to promote Asian Pacific American interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the APA community, and to serve the APA community at large.

Internship Opportunities:
Each summer, CAPAL places over 10 summer interns in the federal government. These internship positions are open to ALL MAJORS, and are suited for individuals looking to gain real-world federal government experience. CAPAL has partnerships with federal agencies including Agricultural Research Services, Forest Service, and Rural Development.

Each CAPAL intern will be awarded a $2,000 stipend to support the successful completion of his/her internship. Up to $500 travel stipends are available. Depending on interests and placement, duties could vary from policy or scientific research, project coordination and management, business, law, communication, and more. Applicants are asked to specify their preferences on the application, and those selected will be placed based on their interests and skills. Agricultural knowledge is not required. These internships are suitable for all students interested in government and public policy.

The focus of much research of immigrants in the Nordic countries has been on the economic circumstances and state policies regarding migration and integration. Far less attention has been devoted to the role of the institutions of civil society in facilitating or impeding the incorporation of newcomers into Nordic societies. The theme of this conference is intended to be a response to that imbalance in research priorities.

The conference organizers are inviting papers that address issues related to the incorporation of newcomers into receiving societies in the developed world, with special emphasis on the Nordic countries, and on issues related to fair means of inclusion. These topics are broad and can be approached from a variety of thematic and methodological perspectives. The mobility of people across national boundaries is an exceptional economic force and catalyst for social and cultural change, but it is also a source of significant policy challenges. This interdisciplinary conference brings together scholars studying the connection between migration and the economic development of individuals, markets, and states in both sending and receiving countries.

The first day of the conference will feature cutting-edge research by economists, sociologists, and demographers. The research will address three themes: “International Migration and Global Poverty,” “Immigration, Jobs and Wages,” and “Undocumented Immigrants and Their Assimilation.” The second day of the conference will examine “Immigration Policy: Current Limits and Potential for Reform” with a moderated discussion among immigration experts from the fields of law, economics, and sociology.

The Center for the History of the New America Announces its Inaugural Conference

Born in the USA: The Politics of Birthright Citizenship in Historical Perspective

Next March, an interdisciplinary group of prominent academics, lawyers, jurists, journalists, and political figures will assemble in College Park for the Center for a New America’s first major conference. Their goal: to place in historical perspective the current debate as to whether the United States ought to reconsider birthright citizenship, which grants automatic citizenship to most persons born on the soil of the United States.

Birthright citizenship is part of the Constitution, having been put there by the Fourteenth Amendment, ratified in 1868. It has given the United States one of the most liberal citizenship regimes in the world, and it has helped to build America’s reputation as a land of immigrants, where anyone can come to seek opportunity, liberty, and equality in a regime of laws that does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, or national origins.

Some who want to eliminate birthright citizenship argue that it has acted as a perverse incentive for immigrants to seek illegal entry to the United States. It permits illegal immigrants to think that they can find a route to permanent residence and security in the United States by giving birth to children on American soil. Their children, who become American citizens upon birth, the argument goes, will “anchor” the illegal parents to America, thus rewarding behavior that ought to be punished.

The state of Arizona is at the forefront of this campaign against birthright citizenship, as it is for other aspects of the campaign against illegal immigrants. In the short term, anti-illegal immigrant forces in the state hope to trigger a legal challenge to a nineteenth-century Supreme Court ruling that declared that a child born to non-citizens on American soil is in fact an American citizen. In the long term these forces hope to stimulate a national campaign to amend the Fourteenth Amendment.

As with many issues regarding immigration, the debate sometimes proceeds with a lot of passion and without a strong knowledge of history. Here are some questions that would benefit from a robust exploration: First, how aware were the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment about the immigration question? To the extent to which they were, what were their thoughts about immigration and birthright citizenship? What do we know of the original intent of the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment’s citizenship clause? Second, why did the Supreme Court in 1898 uphold birthright citizenship for the children of non-citizens? And why in some cases were Native Americans treated differently with regard to birthright citizenship?

Third, how well or how poorly did birthright citizenship work for America, in regards both to legal and illegal immigration, over the course of American history after 1868? On balance, has birthright citizenship been a source of cohesion or discord, of Americanization or cultural balkanization, in American life? Fourth, from the contemporary perspective, what evidence can be marshaled to show that illegal immigrants today are motivated to come by the promise of birthright citizenship for their children? And, finally, what would be the consequences to the Constitution, to personal liberties, and to immigration of a successful effort to remove birthright citizenship from the Fourteenth Amendment?

2011 Pulitzer Prize Winner Eric Foner of Columbia University will open the conference with a keynote address. Other confirmed participants include former Solicitor General of the United States Walter Dellinger; Fourteenth Amendment experts Peter Schuck (Yale Law School), Garrett Epps (University of Baltimore Law School), and Mark Graber (University of Maryland Law School); noted historians Gary Gerstle (Vanderbilt University), David Gutierrez (UCSD), Linda Kerber (University of Iowa), Mae Ngai (Columbia University), and William Novak (University of Michigan School of Law); New York Times journalists Marc Lacey and Nina Bernstein; sociologist Alejandro Portes (Princeton University); and legal scholars Linda Bosniak (Rutgers Law School), Christina Burnett (Columbia Law School), Ayelet Shachar (University of Toronto Law School), and Rebecca Tsosie (Arizona St. Law School). Multicultural America: A Multimedia Encyclopedia presents state-of-the-art research, ready-to-use facts, and multimedia pedagogy. The approximately 950 signed entries (with cross-references and further readings) will cover issues in historical and contemporary ethnic and multicultural studies.

The print 4 volumes and the online edition with 100 videos will include information relevant to the following academic disciplinary contexts: the demographic and cultural balance of the United States today and tomorrow; arts and media; business and economics; criminal justice; education; family studies; health; immigration; media; military; politics; science and technology; sports; and religion. From A-to-Z, this work covers the spectrum of defining and illuminating multiculturalism. The goals of this encyclopedia are to help readers gain a better understanding of:

  • The historical development of multicultural America
  • The contemporary American multicultural mosaic
  • The possible future trajectories of American multiculturalism

In writing, contributors should consider their entries’ contribution to these three goals. Where appropriate, entries should include data from and references to the 2010 United States census.

This comprehensive project will be marketed to academic and public libraries as a print and digital product available to students via the library’s electronic services. The General Editor, who will be reviewing each submission to the project, is Dr. Carlos E. Cortes, Professor Emeritus of History, University of California, Riverside.

The Empire State Fellows Program is a full-time leadership training program that will prepare the next generation of talented professionals for careers as New York State policy-makers. The film is about an out of work Asian-American actress in New York who runs out of money and moves back in with her parents in the suburbs of Detroit. The town is facing a budget crisis and wants to shut down the community theater. She agrees to direct a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera The Mikado to try and save it. It’s a fun but poignant coming-of-age comedy.

Right now, I’m working on securing funding via the IndieGoGo platform. I would be so grateful if you could consider writing a post about the film, sharing it with your followers, or even donating. I noticed you write often about Asian-American identity and I think we can all agree it’s about time for a film featuring an Asian-American character who isn’t just an ethnic side kick or massage parlor worker.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS) Announces 2012 Scholarship Program for Low-Income Minority Students

Eligibility: Gates’ non-profit organization is giving away 1,000 scholarships for the 2012 school season. Bill Gates’ Millennium Scholarship Program will select 1,000 talented students next year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Scholars will also be provided with personal and professional development through their leadership programs, along with academic support throughout their college career.

The program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to provide outstanding low income minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any area of interest. To date, the program has given scholarships to more than 15,000 students. Continuing scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following disciplines: education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.

Postdoc: Asian American Studies, Northwestern

Northwestern University: 2012-13 Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asian American and American Studies

Northwestern University invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Comparative Ethnic Studies jointly sponsored by the Programs in Asian American Studies and American Studies, to begin Fall 2012. We will accept applications from recent Ph.Ds (degree granted during or after 2010); Applicants must complete all Ph.D. requirements before September 1, 2012.

The Mellon postdoctoral fellow is to be in residence during her/his tenure and make a contribution to the intellectual activities of the College and University. While there is no preference in terms of disciplinary field, we are especially looking for scholars whose research and teaching engage comparative ethnic studies in the U.S. and/or the hemisphere of the Americas. The fellow will teach two courses a year which will be cross-listed in Asian American and American Studies as well as deliver one public talk a year based on their research. The fellow would also be invited to interact with other units across the College and University including African American Studies and Latina/o Studies and initiatives like the Colloquium on Ethnicity and Diaspora.

APIAVote-Michigan seeks a community coordinator to lead key aspects of the organization’s strategic plan, primarily through community/voter engagement, leadership development, and fundraising initiatives. Call for Submissions: Nineteen Sixty-Nine (Ethnic Studies)

Nineteen sixty nine (NSN) highlights the critical and innovative work being done in Ethnic Studies by undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, institutional affiliations, and national boundaries. Being an e-journal with the ability to incorporate various forms of knowledge production (images, film, sound, and text), the journal features academic and creative works as well as book reviews.

We feel that Ethnic Studies, at its core, is an interdisciplinary project that critically underlines how race has and continues to shape our society and the world at large. To this end, this journal provides a venue for the continued evolution of the field, offering a space to discuss timely topics in a rigorous and generative way.

Though the journal emphasizes the work being done by students, NSN accepts and encourages submissions from all segments of the activist, creative, and scholarly communities. As such, true to its namesake, this journal is emblematic of how Ethnic Studies critically redefines what it means to study race, and how the field engages with and is enriched by the multiplicity of knowledge-makers that work within it.

Nineteen sixty nine is accepting creative works (images, film, sound, and text), scholarly essays, and book reviews for its first volume. Submissions may address the volume’s main theme or address another topic (see website).

APIA Spoken Word & Poetry Summit, Twin Cities MN

The APIA Spoken Word & Poetry Summit is a biennial gathering of Asian Pacific Islander American community artists and activists. It’s happening August 4-7 in beautiful Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. We come together to:

  • provide space for artists and activists to learn from each other and build community
  • recognize spoken word performance as a source of new language, new ideas, new dialogues and understandings, and creative fodder for activism and organizing
  • acknowledge the arts as a critical, elemental component in building, empowering, and transforming our communities and ourselves

The theme for this year’s Summit is “Moving It Forward, Bringing It Back.” We envision the 2011 Summit as a space to foster intergenerational dialogue with an explicit elder presence, a youth component, and activities for all those in between. We will also explore the various ways spoken word has pushed into other genres (theater, music, film) while bringing it back to our poetic roots. Similarly, we will foster a dialogue on past APIA social movements and present possibilities, encouraging participants to bring the conversation back to their own organizations and localities.

Teaching Fellowships: Overseas Young Chinese Forum

The Overseas Young Chinese Forum (“OYCF”), a non-profit organization based in the United States, is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its Teaching Fellowships, which sponsor short term teaching trips by overseas scholars or professionals (Chinese or non-Chinese) to universities or other comparable advanced educational institutions in China. The subjects of teaching include all fields of humanities and social sciences, such as anthropology, art, communication, economics, education, geography, law, literatures, philosophy, political science, sociology, etc.

OYCF will grant 15 fellowship awards to support short term teaching trips during the Academic Year of 2011-12, including six (6) OYCF-Ford fellowships in the amount of $2,500 each and nine (9) OYCF-Gregory C. and Paula K. Chow fellowships in the amount of $2,000 each. The application deadline is August 15, 2011. Awards will be announced on September 15, 2011.

If you have a Ph.D., J.D., J.S.D. or a comparable graduate degree from, or is currently an advanced doctoral candidate (having passed the Ph.D. qualification examination and finished at least three years of graduate studies) in a university in North America or other areas outside China, and are interested in teaching a covered subject in a college or graduate school in Mainland China, please find on line the Information and Application Procedures for the OYCF Teaching Fellowships at http://www.oycf.org/Teach/application.DOC.

Ph.D. students are highly encouraged to apply because an independent teaching experience will add significant weight in the resumes and help build strong connection with China’s academia. As noted therein, preference will be given to teaching proposals that include comparative or interdisciplinary perspectives; are about subjects that China is in relative shortage of teachers; or will be conducted at universities in inland provinces and regions. High School Senior Scholarships

OCA-Greater Chicago, one of the fifty chapters of Organization of Chinese Americans, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), is proud to offer six different types of scholarships for APA high school seniors.

Each scholarship is valued at $2,500 and a total of ten scholarships will be awarded. In order to be eligible, applicants must be a permanent resident of the Chicagoland metropolitan area, a current high school senior who identifies as Asian Pacific American entering college or university in Fall 2011, demonstrate financial need, be a permanent resident or US citizen, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale), and have a strong history and intent of community service.

Grad Student Essay Contest, Amerasia Journal

Amerasia Journal invites faculty to nominate exceptional graduate student essays (masters and doctoral level) in the interdisciplinary field of Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies for the Lucie Cheng Prize. The winning article will be published in Amerasia Journal, and $1000 will be awarded.

The Lucie Cheng Prize honors the late Professor Lucie Cheng (1939-2010), a longtime faculty member of UCLA and the first permanent director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center (1972-1987). Professor Cheng was a pioneering scholar who brought an early and enduring transnational focus to the study of Asian Americans and issues such as labor and immigration.

The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) is thrilled to announce our Call for Entries for the 30th Annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF)! SFIAAFF accepts films and videos made by or about Asian Americans and Asians of any nationality. All lengths and genres will be considered.

SFIAAFF takes place every March in California’s Bay Area and is the nation’s largest showcase for new Asian American and Asian films. Since 1982, SFIAAFF has been an important launching point and advocate for Asian American independent filmmakers and a vital source for new Asian cinema.

NAKASEC is a dynamic grassroots-based organization founded in 1994 by local community centers to project a progressive voice and promote the full participation of Korean Americans within the social justice movement. NAKASEC has offices in Los Angeles and Washington, DC. NAKASEC has affiliates in Los Angeles (The Korean Resource Center) and in Chicago (The Korean American Resource & Cultural Center) and works in partnership with local community based organizations across the nation. Scholarship: API LGBT Student in Bay Area

The Tang Scholarship

Mr. Edward C. Tang established this award in 2007 to provide financial assistance to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (l/g/b/t) Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) for post-secondary Education. This scholarship is to help LGBT youth proudly achieve educational pursuits and dreams without shame. This scholarship awards up to two outstanding students annually, a combined scholarships totaling up to $15,000. These scholarships are renewable for a maximum of three more years (a total of four years) provided each student annually meets the renewal requirements.

Each applicant must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Self-identified as Asian/Pacific Islander and gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender; (at least 25% API ancestry); and involved in the GLBT community
  • Graduate from a high school in one of the nine Bay Area counties; Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara County, Napa, Sonoma or Solano
  • Scholarship will be awarded for full-time (minimum 12 units for all semesters/quarters) enrollment in an accredited two, four-year university or graduate school; (college, university, community college or vocational school)
  • United States citizen or legal resident
  • Demonstrated financial hardship
  • Demonstrated academic promise

    Scholarship: Asian American Government Executives Network

    Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN) Scholarship Program 2011

    Applications Due 15 May 2011

    The mission of AAGEN is to promote, expand and support Asian Pacific American (APA) leadership in the Federal, State and Local governments. In accordance with AAGEN’s mission, the scholarship program has been designed for students in their continuing education to better prepare themselves for positions of leadership and trust in the Federal, State and Local governments.

    One (1) award for $1,500.00, one (1) award for $1,000, and two (2) awards for $500.00 each will be made annually. AAGEN scholarships are one-time awards — former AAGEN scholarship winners are not eligible. Scholarship checks will be made out to the college or university the recipient will be attending. These checks will be directly deposited into the student’s account.

    Applications will be evaluated based on five (5) criteria listed below:

    • Relationship of courses to be taken (or field of study) with service at the local/state and/or federal government levels
    • Demonstration of academic achievement and excellence with a copy of either standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, GRE) and/or a 3.3 or better grade point average
    • School, employment or extra-employment activities that demonstrate a seriousness of purpose in serving at leadership positions in the local/state and/or federal government levels
    • Letters of nomination and recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, public official or an AAGEN member, who knows the applicant well and is qualified to recommend the applicant. The letters should convey information about the applicant and his/her ability to serve in leadership positions at the local, state or federal government. These letters should not be written by a family member of the applicant

    Postdoc: Vietnamese American Oral History, U.C. Irvine

    2011-2012 Vietnamese American Oral History Project at University of California, Irvine Postdoctoral Fellowship

    The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Department of Asian American Studies, in collaboration with the UCI Libraries Southeast Asian Archive, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship to develop, conduct, organize, and publicize a three-year Oral History project that documents the experiences of Vietnamese Americans in Southern California. The fellowship includes a stipend of $50,000, research and travel support up to $5000, and health benefits. This is a one-year fellowship with the possibility of renewal up to three years. The position will begin on September 1, 2011.

    The fellow will be expected to teach one 10-week seminar per academic year for the Department of Asian American Studies, based on the Oral History project. The fellow will work closely with a faculty mentor and will consult with an advisory group to the project. It is expected that by the end of the three-year term of the fellowship that the oral histories assembled and recorded will be made available and accessible for public use, and that the postdoctoral fellow will serve as the principal coordinator for the public unveiling of the project.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, identifying and selecting interviewees, conducting oral histories, supervising transcriptions, and producing formats to highlight the oral histories. The fellow will work to create standardized metadata of interviews for inclusion in an online database. Working knowledge of preservation practices and standards for digital video and audio equipment, files and formats, and editing software is preferred. The fellow will also create publicity for the project online, in printed formats, and at community events or exhibits. The fellow will manage the project budget, which includes hiring, training, and supervising research assistants.

    Fellows must have valid U.S. work eligibility and hold a Ph.D. from an accredited college or university at the time of appointment. Vietnamese language proficiency is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have subject expertise on Vietnamese Americans, experience conducting Vietnamese American oral histories, and knowledge of principles and practices in oral history methodologies.

    Internship: API Domestic Violence Resource Center

    Spring/Summer 2011 Internship at the Asian/ Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project.

    The Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP) is seeking a spring/summer intern. Founded in 1995, DVRP is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization that works to prevent domestic violence in the Asian and Pacific Islander (A/PI) communities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. DVRP is a small, non-hierarchical organization supported by a collaborative style of leadership.

    Recognizing that A/PI survivors of domestic violence have a variety of needs in order to attain safety for themselves and their children, DVRP Advocates Program provides direct assistance on an individual level, with special consideration for cultural and linguistic needs. The intern will provide assistance to DVRP’s Advocates Program, Community Outreach Program, and the Board of Directors.

    Tasks related to the Advocates Program include:

    • Find resources for Advocates Training and Women’s Group
    • Assist in administering evaluation surveys
    • Assist with coordinating Advocates Training
    • Update resource lists for the Advocates Program
    • Perform administrative tasks

    The Community Outreach Program insures that the A/PI communities in DC/MD/VA area, as well as service providers, know about DVRP’s services by circulating our materials to groups and at events, and offering workshops and trainings. Task include:

    Call for Papers: API Nexus Special Issue on Immigration

    Since the 1990s, incremental changes in U.S. immigration laws and policies have dramatically changed and complicated migration from Asia and the Pacific Islands to the United States. While the U.S. Office of Immigration Statistics counted over 6.3 million new permanent residents from Asia and the Pacific Islands, even this staggering figure is a poor indicator of the actual volume of Asian-Pacific immigration, for it leaves out persons who are out of status, or persons who are admitted as non-immigrants.

    Even though people in these two categories are often represented in the opposite ends of the migration spectrum — former as “illegal” and “invisible” immigrants and the latter as the wealthy investors and skilled workers — the two groups are interrelated: they both live in the same communities; the professional Asian immigrants often depend on the labor of unskilled co-ethnics; and sometimes they are in the same family.

    In addition, over the past two decades, we’ve witnessed a significant re-migration to Asia and the Pacific Islands — AAPIs of all generations have “gone back” to continue their education, to pursue a career or to manage investments, or to rejoin their families. Sometimes they stay, sometimes they come back: once exotic terms such as “parachute kids,” “Chinese sea turtles,” and “Korean goose families” are now part of the common lexicon to describe some of the transpacific complexities.

    In all these instances, governments have developed immigration policies to pursue a variety of goals — U.S. policies that seek to attract wealthy investors and skilled workers, admit more workers on a temporary or contingent basis, discourage the poor, and facilitate removal and deportation have been adopted by other countries.

    In this context of dynamic change, we invite new work that contributes to our understanding of contemporary Asian American and Pacific Islander migrations in all of their complexity, from scholars, activists, and practitioners. Professor Edward Park, Loyola Marymount University and Professor John Park, University of California, Santa Barbara, will be the consulting Guest Editors working with the editorial staff on this volume. The Special Issue is scheduled for publication in Spring 2012.

    We encourage paper submissions that provide perspectives of practitioners, academic researchers, and applied policy analysts.     Call for Participants: BBC Documentary on Viet Nam War

    Dear Sir,

    I am a BBC journalist writing from London. I work on a history programme called “Witness”, which focuses on significant events in the recent past. The hundreds of subjects that we have looked at have included the trial of Nelson Mandela, the bombing of Hiroshima and the beginnings of the civil rights movement in America — to name just a few. Our programme is broadcast to a large audience around the world.

    And in the weeks ahead we very much hope to focus on the stories of those who fled Vietnam by boat at the end of the war there in the 1970s. We are simply looking for interviewees who might be willing to tell us — in quite strong English — what they went through. I realise that, for some, remembering such traumatic events this will not be at all easy. But we would like to be able to remind our listeners around the world what the Vietnamese boat people endured. We want to record their story for our archive.

    JACL Scholarships: Deadlines Approaching

    The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is kicking off its Scholarship Program for the 2011 academic year. At the national level, JACL offers over 30 awards, with an annual total of over $60,000 in scholarships.

    Youth Justice Leadership Program

    Youth Justice Leadership Institute Seeks Applicants for 2011-2012 Program Year

    The National Juvenile Justice Network seeks applicants for the pilot year of its Youth Justice Leadership Institute. The Institute’s mission is to create the foundation for a more effective juvenile justice reform movement by developing a strong base of well prepared and well trained advocates and organizers who reflect the communities most affected by juvenile justice system practices and policies.

    The Institute’s inaugural year will focus on cultivating and supporting professionals of color. The Institute is a robust, year long program that includes leadership development, training in juvenile justice system policies and practices, and advocacy skills development. The Institute will bring fellows together twice during the year, attach each fellow to a mentor and envelope fellows within the larger juvenile justice reform community.

    Call for Papers: ‘The Chinese Shop’ Conference

    The “Chinese shop” in all its manifestations (laundry, bakery, restaurant, general store, etc.) has been integrally connected to Chinese migration and the experience of overseas Chinese. Indeed, the Chinese shop has been both a site of economic and symbolic exchange – a complex locus of power and performative societal tensions and identifications. As such, the consideration of Chinese shop space provides an intriguing staring point from which to investigate many key socio-political issues for Chinese diasporic communities.

    Hosted at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, this conference aims to bring together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to investigate how the space and place of the Chinese shop (broadly defined) has been conceived of and experienced for overseas Chinese. In particular, it seeks to explore the transformative socio-cultural, economic and political processes that create the space and place of the Chinese shop both within Chinese diasporic communities and in terms of encounters between the Chinese and their host societies.

    We encourage panels and papers with diverse disciplinary approaches to this theme, including those that consider the Chinese shop within transnational, hemispheric and/or comparative contexts. Topics might include, but are not limited to the following:

    • The representation and imagination of shop space
    • The political contestations and designations of shop space
    • Theoretical deliberations on the spatial dimensions of the Chinese shop
    • The shop as gendered space
    • The shop as racialized space
    • The historical, social and economic implications of the Chinese shop
    • The impact of nationalism, globalization, colonialism, and/or imperialism on Chinese shop space

    Scholarship, ICPSR Quantitative Methods Summer Program

    A scholarship fund has been established in honor of Warren E. Miller for participation in the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) 2011 Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research. Professor Miller was not only one of the most prominent figures in modern social science research. He was also the founder of both ICPSR and the ICPSR Summer Program.

    The Warren E. Miller Scholarship Fund will provide financial support to outstanding pre-tenure scholars (assistant professors and advanced graduate students) in the social and behavioral sciences so they may attend one or both of the four-week sessions in the 2011 ICPSR Summer Program. Recipients of the Miller Scholarship will receive a fee waiver to cover Program enrollment and a stipend to help with expenses while staying in Ann Arbor. Applicants to the Warren E. Miller Scholarship should have professional interests in one or more of the following areas of research (or in related fields):

    • Developing a common approach to understanding electoral behavior within or across nations
    • Understanding the process of democratization in electoral systems
    • Understanding the link between global politics and local electoral behavior
    • Understanding how context influences political behavior
    • Understanding how globalization causes change in political behavior

    Application materials for the Miller Scholarship should be submitted electronically, through the ICPSR Summer Program’s online Portal on the Summer Program’s website. Applicants should register for the 2011 Summer Program using the online form and select classes in one or both of the four-week sessions. Note that course selections may be modified and changed later. But, the Miller Scholarship Committee may use an applicant’s preferred courses as a criterion in the selection process for the scholarship. Along with a completed registration, an application must include:

    1. A current vita
    2. A cover letter from the student, explaining how participation in the ICPSR Summer Program will contribute toward completion of the Ph.D.
    3. Two letters of recommendation. For applicants who are faculty members, one of these letters should come from his or her Department Chair. For graduate student applicants, one of the letters should come from his or her faculty advisor or dissertation chairperson.     Call for Papers: Critical Refugee Studies

    Conference on Critical Refugee Studies

    Displacement of populations affects the uprooted as well as communities that receive them. Recognized by international proxy after World War II, the identity category of refugee has a history as long as the incidence of warfare and other crises that result in displacement. This conference uses the 20th century invention of the category of refugee as a means to compare the experiences of displaced persons across time and space.

    We invite papers that chronicle and reflect on the experiences and representations of refugee populations. In particular, we are interested in work that expands the idea of the refugee to create comparisons and parallels with the experiences of other groups. Papers that define the term refugee broadly and creatively are most welcome. Among the questions we invite:

    • How do refugee identities compare to those of other migrants?
    • As local and global political contexts change, how do refugees conceptualize notions of citizenship and home?
    • How are refugee identities in dialogue with concepts of place/displacement?
    • What is the role of memory and the creation of refugee texts?
    • How is the refugee experience mediated/mass mediated?

    Call for Papers: Disability in Asian America

    Amerasia Journal Special Issue Call for Papers: The State of Illness and Disability in Asian America
    Guest Editors: Professor Jennifer Ho (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) and Professor James Kyung-Jin Lee (University of California, Irvine)

    We seek critical essays and articles as well as creative non-fiction and first-person accounts that engage with the intersections of Asian American discourse and illness/disability studies, for a special issue of Amerasia Journal, scheduled for publication in 2012.

    Since, as scholar Michael Berube observes, “the definition of disability, like the definition of illness, is inevitably a matter of social debate and social construction,” we are interested in how these social constructions of disability and illness coincide, collide, and converge with those of ethnicity and race, along with other axes of intersectionality such as gender, sexuality, class, region, religion, age, and education.

    Critiquing the narrow perspective of the discipline, scholar Chris Bell has noted “the failure of Disability Studies to engage issues of race and ethnicity in a substantive capacity, thereby entrenching whiteness as its constitutive underpinning.” One goal of this special issue is to provide another forum in which to challenge entrenched whiteness within Disability and Illness Studies as well as to bring to the foreground the state of illness and disability within the Asian American community. Contributors to this special issue may consider the following questions:

    • What is the role of illness and disability within Asian American narratives—be they in fiction, non-fiction, or cinematic form—and/or how is the ill or disabled Asian American body represented within these narratives?
    • How are illness and disability regarded within Asian American communities and cultural productions?
    • What are the special needs of Asian Americans who face life threatening and chronic illnesses?
    • What kinds of accommodations do Asian Americans with disabilities find most challenging in light of their ethnic and cultural backgrounds and/or as a result of their racialization as non-white Americans?
    • How might Asian American experiences of disability and/or illness invite a reimagination of what constitutes a “good” life practice or way of living, and what kinds of social transformations would be necessary to make this so?

    Call for Papers: Mixed-Status Immigrant Families

    “In Between the Shadows of Citizenship: Mixed Status Families”

    Guest Editors: Mary Romero, Professor, Arizona State University, Justice and Social Inquiry and Jodie Lawston, Assistant Professor, California State University San Marcos, Women’s Studies

    Despite the fact that immigration stories are increasingly featured in U.S. popular media discourse and an immigrant justice movement continues to strengthen, little scholarship has focused on the experiences of immigrants and their families, and especially, families who are mixed status in that they are comprised of both citizens and noncitizens. This edited volume aims to examine the experiences of immigrants and mixed status families in terms of work and education, raids, deportations, and detention, and resistance toward anti-immigrant sentiment. We welcome and encourage work that examines not just the experiences of immigrants in the U.S., but the experiences of immigrants around the globe.

    The questions we are interested in exploring include but are not restricted to the following: What forms of work do immigrant women engage in to support their families? What are the struggles of undocumented students? How do raids, deportations, and detention affect families? How do such phenomena affect mixed status families? What are the experiences of immigrants, particularly women and children, in detention? How have changes in laws affected undocumented immigrants and their children? What strategies have justice movements used to protect undocumented men, women, and children? How are countries around the world approaching immigration and undocumented immigration, and how does that compare to U.S. policies? We seek explorations and answers to these questions that engage notions of gender, race and ethnicity, place, and culture as well as documentation and analysis of leadership and activism.

    The following topical areas broadly outline the subject matter that we see as most relevant to this volume. These can be used as starting points for papers, but authors are not restricted to them:

    • The effects of detention on immigrant families, particularly in separating those families
    • The impact of family reunification
    • The intersection of work and immigration status
    • The effects of immigration status on students
    • The effects of raids and/or deportations on families
    • Changes in laws and resulting effects on immigrants’ lives
    • Immigrant justice work
    • Comparative studies of issues related to immigration in different parts of the world
    • The intersections of race, class, gender, and with immigration status

    We are interested in both academic papers and testimonies from immigrant women on the above topics.

    Position: English, Hawai’i Pacific University

    The Department of English, Hawai’i Pacific University, invites applications for 1 full-time, career-track (in lieu of a tenure system, HPU uses a “career-track” system consisting of 5 years of renewable reappointments (two 1-year and a 3-year contract) culminating in “career” status consisting of a series of 5-year contracts) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor for a nine-month appointment to begin Fall 2011.     Position: Field Manager, The Leadership Conference

    The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (The Leadership Conference) is the leading coalition of organizations committed to civil and human rights in the United States and The Leadership Conference Education Fund is the major research and education organization supporting the coalition. We are seeking applicants for the position of field manager with a background in social media organizing, among other qualifications. It’s a great opportunity to work on multiple civil and human rights issues with a diverse range of groups and communities, nationally and at the state and local level.

    Description
    The Field Manager will be responsible for a variety of tasks within the Department of Field Operations (DFO). The employee in this position will report to the Vice President, Field Operations, with guidance from the Deputy Field Director(s).

    Skills and Qualifications
    The job requires a commitment to civil and human rights; organizing and outreach experience; a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks; planning and coordinating skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adhere to deadlines. Minimum requirements are a Bachelors degree; a minimum of three years of field/grassroots experience, preferably with a focus on the creation of materials and tools designed for community leaders and grassroots campaigns; and a demonstrated understanding of and proficiency in the use of social media and web activism software, and Microsoft applications.

    Excellent writing and verbal skills, particularly as related to drafting and creating field materials and tools; desire and ability to work with diverse groups of people; desire and ability to manage a complex, ever-changing workload; ability to organize time efficiently; ability to work with intra-departmental teams, interns, and community leaders; and a high level of personal energy and commitment to civil and human rights are essential. Hill experience not required, however a plus.

    This is a mid-level position at the center of the organizations’ major work. The employee will have the opportunity to work with the DFO to participate in and/or lead field campaigns to activate the grassroots on critical civil and human rights issues. The employee will play a key role in developing and advancing grassroots strategy on the major priority issues of The Leadership Conference. S/he will also be exposed to the most broad-based civil and human rights coalition in the country, and to participatory democracy at its best.

    Duties and Responsibilities
    Work directly with the Vice President for Field Operations and field team to:

    • Envision and draft materials, alerts and tools for grassroots activists, community leaders, and the civil and human rights coalition as the DFO develops field campaigns on priority Leadership Conference issues
    • Work with the field team to devise a strategy around components of online activism, such as Internet action alerts, social networking systems and innovative web-based outreach
    • Serve as DFO representative on the intra-departmental Online Strategy Group
    • Devise grassroots outreach and activation strategies on organizational priority issues, with a particularized focus on developing written materials and social media tools for national, state, and local partners’ use
    • Plan, manage and maintain effective technical support for members of the coalition in their efforts to activate the grassroots and for state and local partner organizations as they implement grassroots campaigns
    • Drive and monitor the development of field outreach, public education, and capacity campaigns in a set of key states as they relate to the organizations’ priority issues and areas of focus
    • Work with the DFO to develop grassroots coalitions in key states and to organize national grassroots task force meetings
    • Participate in department, All-Staff, team, and other meetings as needed

    Reality Show Call for Participants: Asian American Families

    We have been commissioned by the BBC to make a programme on family values and parenting in different nations and cultures all over the world. We are now in the 4th series of this very popular programme but have yet to represent a family of Asian origin – and would very much like to do so in the States in the coming weeks.

    We are reaching out to families ( with teens) and are hoping that a loving, but disciplined family will be interested in participating in the series whereby they ‘host’ 2 British teenagers for a week, instilling in them the values and morality they demand of their own children. This very popular programme has already met and filmed inspirational families in countries ranging from South Africa to India, US to Lebanon.

    Online Survey: Asian American Values

    I am a doctoral candidate from the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services at the University of Georgia under the direction of Dr. Brian Glaser. I invite you to participate in a research study entitled “A Study of Scale Construction in the Asian American/Pacific Islander Population”. The purpose of this study is to investigate the values system within the Asian American/ Pacific Islanders (AAPI) population in order to create a scale that accurately quantifies these values.

    You are invited to participate in a study investigating value systems in the Asian-American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) population. Any self-identified AAPI or with AAPI heritage, ages 18 and over, are welcome to participate. If you agree to participate, you will be asked to answer a series of question reflecting your values system as part of a larger study to create a measurement scale. Your answers will remain anonymous.

    The scale consists of 46 items and will take approximately 5-20 minutes to complete. By taking part in this study, your responses may help improve the conceptualization and treatment of AAPI clients in therapy.     The Asian American Studies Program at Hunter College (AASP), The City University of New York, currently seeks candidates to develop and teach Asian American Studies courses primarily in the Social Sciences, e.g. Psychology, Political Science, History, Sociology, Human Rights, Economics, etc. In addition, we also seek candidates to develop and teach Asian American Studies courses in Education, Journalism/Media Studies/Communication, and Public Health.     About the Program
    The Asian American Studies Program (AASP) at Hunter College was founded in 1993 on the initiative of students and faculty. Today, we are a small but dynamic program with a growing number of minors, and we offer approximately 12 courses per semester, ranging from our interdisciplinary survey courses to more advanced courses in Literature, Cultural Studies, and Diasporic community formations — West Asian American, Chinese American, and Korean American in particular. Located in the heart of New York City, the AASP works closely with Asian American organizations to build and sustain ties to local communities and concerns. Affiliated full-time faculty in the College are located in areas as diverse as Urban Studies, Film and Media, Sociology, English, and Dance.

    Pre-Doctoral Diversity Fellowship, Ithaca College

    The School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College announces a Pre-Doctoral Diversity Fellowship for 2011-12. The fellowship supports promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy in order to better prepare them for tenure track appointments within liberal arts or comprehensive colleges/universities.

    Applications are welcome in the following areas: Anthropology, Communication Studies, Education, English, History, Religion, and Sociology. The school also houses a number of interdisciplinary minors that may be of interest to candidates: African Diaspora Studies, Jewish Studies, Latino/a Studies, Latin American Studies, Muslim Cultures, Native American Studies, and Women’s Studies. Fellows who successfully obtain the Ph.D. and show an exemplary record of teaching and scholarship and engagement in academic service throughout their fellowship, may be considered as candidates for tenure-eligible appointments anticipated to begin in the fall of 2012.

    Terms of fellowship: Fellowship is anticipated for the academic year (August 16, 2011 to May 31, 2012) and is non-renewable. The fellow will receive a $30,000 stipend, $3,000 in travel/professional development support, office space, health benefits, and access to Ithaca College and Cornell University libraries. The fellow will teach one course in the fall semester and one course in the spring semester and be invited to speak about her/his dissertation research in relevant classes and at special events at Ithaca College.

    Enrollment in an accredited program leading to a Ph.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution, evidence of superior academic achievement, and commitment to a career in teaching at the college or university level required. Candidates must also be authorized to work in the United States.

    Prior to August 15, 2011, the fellow must be advanced to candidacy at his or her home institution with an approved dissertation proposal. Preference will be given to those candidates in the final writing stages of their dissertation. Candidates from underrepresented groups whose exclusion from membership in the American professoriate has been longstanding are strongly encouraged to apply.

    Successful candidates will show evidence of superior academic achievement, a high degree of promise of continuing achievement as scholars and teachers, a capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds, sustained personal engagement with communities that are underrepresented in the academy and an ability to bring this asset to learning, teaching, and scholarship at the college and university level, and a likelihood of using the diversity of human experience as an educational resource in teaching and scholarship.

    Nature of Position:
    The Assistant Director is a full-time academic professional staff member in the Asian American Cultural Center, a unit of the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations, a department of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Primary responsibilities include developing and coordinating programs and activities of the center, advising student organizations, and assisting in supervising student employees and volunteers.     Purpose: To cultivate future leadership for the Asian Pacific American (APA) community by providing opportunities to work in the public sector and learn about issues affecting the APAs.     Congressional Scholarship: Japanese American Citizens League

    The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is now accepting applications for the 2011 JACL Mike M. Masaoka Fellowship. The 2010 Masaoka Fellow is Mike Misha Tsukerman, who is serving in the office of Senator Daniel K. Inouye. National JACL President, David Kawamoto, said: “We encourage young members of the JACL who are college graduates to apply for this Fellowship which offers a unique experience in the nation’s capital.”

    The Mike M. Masaoka Fellowship Fund was established in 1988 to honor Mike M. Masaoka for a lifetime of public service to the JACL and the nation. Masaoka was the JACL’s national secretary, field executive, national legislative director of the JACL’s Anti-Discrimination Committee, and the JACL Washington, D.C. Representative. He worked tirelessly to advance the cause of Japanese Americans during difficult times.

    The Fund was set up by good friends of Mike Masaoka. Dr. H. Tom Tamaki of Philadelphia administered the program for the JACL for twenty years since its inception. The JACL Washington, D.C. office now administers the program. JACL Masaoka Fellows are placed in the Washington D.C. Congressional offices of members of the United States Senate or the House of Representatives for a period of six to eight months. The major purpose of the Masaoka Fellowship is to develop leaders for public service. They are expected to be future leaders of the JACL.

    Floyd Mori, National Executive Director of the JACL, stated: “The Mike M. Masaoka Fellowship is a flagship program of the JACL. We are grateful to those who had the foresight to set up such a fund and program to develop young leaders. This is a great opportunity to work in the office of a member of Congress.”

    Eva Lowe Fellowship for Social Justice

    The Eva Lowe Fellowship for Social Justice at the Chinese Progressive Association. Applications due Monday March 8 , 2010.

    Eva Lowe is a longtime progressive community activist who has committed her life to serving the community, she turns 101 this year. Born in Fort Bragg, California in 1909, she and her family went back and forth to China for education and to support the anti-imperialist movement. She was inspired by China’s movement and the women’s rights movement and got involved in many progressive issues. . . . Eva has dedicated her life to social and economic justice and believes that people should actively work to end imperialism and ‘fight for the underdog,’ the poor and working class community.

    The Eva Lowe Fellowship for Social Justice provides a unique opportunity to a new generation of activists and organizers who want to build the power of and improve the lives of the working class Chinese immigrant community. During eight weeks of intensive training, ground work and reflection, Eva Lowe Fellows will learn about and support Chinese immigrant struggles in San Francisco, work to connect the larger API Movement across the country and build lasting relationships with peers, mentors and community members.

    All placements for the program will be in San Francisco, California. Scholarships ranging from $500 – $2000 are available but students are also encouraged to seek additional and alternative funding sources (include campus work-study programs, scholarships and stipends). All other costs will the responsibility of each Fellow though some assistance may be offered to locate and secure housing. A maximum of four Fellows will be chosen for the 2010 year.     Organization of Chinese Americans & Verizon College Scholarship

    The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, economic, and political well-being of Asian Pacific Americans, is accepting applications from current undergraduate students for the OCA-Verizon College scholarship for fall semester 2010. This is a reminder that applications are due April 1, 2010.

    Given the current recession, it is important to capitalize on all available resources. The OCA-Verizon College scholarship is a $2,000 award that will highlight your scholarly achievements, ease financial obstacles, and add prestige to your resumé. In order to be eligible, applicants must be a student who identifies as Asian Pacific American entering their sophomore, junior, or senior years, demonstrate financial need, be a permanent resident or US citizen, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale), and must be pursuing one of the following majors:

    White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Internship

    The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) is responsible for the Department’s implementation of the Executive Order of October 14, 2009 which is designed to improve Federal efforts to develop, monitor, and coordinate executive branch efforts to improve the quality of life of AAPIs through increased participation in Federal programs. The Initiative is housed at the Department of Education, but represents a collaboration among many Federal agencies.

    Intern Duties:

    • Perform research on and outreach to national and local AAPI organizations, elected officials, and ethnic media outlets
    • Conduct research on WHIAAPI issue areas, including education, commerce, health, housing, labor and employment, community and economic development as they relate to AAPIs

    Intern Qualifications:

    • Currently enrolled undergraduate student (it is a requirement that interns be enrolled in school at least half time)
